Burnout & Overwhelm
Burnout & Overwhelm
When coping becomes constant, even the smallest things can start to feel impossible.
What is burnout?
Burnout isn’t just being tired and stressed for a long time; it’s the slow erosion of energy, focus, and meaning under chronic pressure. It can come from work, caregiving, study, or simply the constant demand to hold everything together. Overwhelm is the point where your internal system is overloaded and running without rest.
Burnout is often hidden behind competence. You may still be functioning but it feels brittle. There’s little left in reserve, if anything. You start to feel like you are so distanced from yourself and the things you care about.
How it might show up:
- Constant exhaustion, even after rest
- Feeling emotionally numb or irritable
- Trouble concentrating or finishing tasks
- Dreading things that used to feel manageable
- Increased self-doubt, detachment, or cynicism
- Reduced sense of accomplishment
- Physical symptoms: headaches, insomnia, body tension
How CBT helps
CBT offers a structured way to understand the patterns that lead to burnout; not just external pressures, but internal responses: overcommitment, perfectionism, difficulty saying no, or the belief that rest, or even love, must be earned.
It helps shift the cycle by looking at how thoughts, habits, and emotional expectations reinforce exhaustion, as well as rebuilding meaning and engagement.
What treatment involves:
-
Identifying burnout contributors, both situational and internal
-
Reframing beliefs around worth, responsibility, and limits
-
Behavioural adjustments to reduce overload and introduce recovery
-
Mapping emotional triggers and stress responses
-
Boundary setting and value clarification to reprioritise energy
-
Resource and engagement building to bring you can to the things you care about.
While coping skills matter, burnout management is based in connection and meaning.
